The Real Deal

Today we officially became a registered South Carolina non-profit charity!

The paperwork is so mind boggling I feel like shouting this from the rooftops, even if it doesn't look spectacular on the page.  Last step is the big one: tackling the IRS "tax exempt" paperwork.  This will enable us to solicit funds from the kind of folks who look for nice tax write-offs which actually aid in good deeds.

And THAT'S the part I'm excited about....
helping our wounded warriors find their way back
along the road of self esteem.

Thanks y'all for being so patient and supportive!

It Has A Good Beat and You Can Dance To It

Most of the Saturday mornings of my pre-teen/teenage years were spent watching Dick Clark and "American Bandstand".   Clark might've been the "white bread" version of music compared to Don Cornelius of "Soul Train, but Clark loved music, possibly more than I did.  Every week he enthusiastically introduced me to new music, bringing interesting and sometimes um...odd looking musicians into my living room. (If you never saw "Paul Revere and the Raiders", you should Google them for a good laugh).   I can still remember my Dad stopping long enough to watch a teenager named Michael Jackson perform, then utter in thoughtful amazement, "That kid's got talent!"  High praise considering most parents probably would've kept on walking to get away from " that noise the kids listen to these days."

Dick Clark died on Wednesday, at the age of 82.  As soon as I heard, a line from Don McLean's "American Pie" whispered through my head..."the day, the music died."

Clark expanded my musical horizons, never talked down to my generation or the ones which followed and NEVER lost his sense of awe over music in general.  Although it became difficult watching his New Year's Eve specials, the effects of a stroke 4 years ago slurring his speech, just the fact he kept showing up was life affirming somehow.  If we were home on New Year's eve, we always counted down the year's end with Clark, who managed to convey that the NEW year would be a magical experience somehow.

Everyone teased that Dick Clark never seemed to age.  I bet St. Pete says the same thing when Clark shows up to Rock 'n Roll Heaven.

RIP Dick Clark.  You made being a teenager interesting, offering a good beat that helped me dance through the rougher patches of youth.

Friday 55

Oh come KNOW Friday the 13th is much luckier than Monday the 13th.  So write that 55 word story and share it with the g-man.  Yes, today mine is a personal truth that I wanted to share with everyone.

It's official!
The  non-profit corporation
Crossroads Wounded Warrior Archery Foundation
is a legal reality.

And after we wade through
Another 10 pages of "charity" documentation,
Plus 30 more for tax exemption status,
we can raise funds
to help wounded soldiers who risked their lives for us.

Guess I can stand a few more paper cuts.

Now Let Me Ask You A Question

Such a simple beginning was often how newsman Mike Wallace began an interview.  And it was often the last time he was smiling because he wanted to get to the bottom of the truth.  The real truth.  Not the media version.

Wallace has passed away at age 93 and I wonder if today's "news" people even know who he is, much less how he accomplished it. That telling the truth part, I mean.

Mike Wallace was once asked when he "knew" he'd become a household name. His answer was, "There are three things Americans dread hearing.  You need a root canal.  The IRS just called.  And Mike Wallace is at the front door."

I wonder what St. Pete said when Wallace showed up at the Pearly Gates.  :)

Happy Easter!

From us and our Chocolate Bunny....
the only chocolate in the house that is safe from me.
Although Bunny Boy knows a thing or two about eating!

Clematis, Part 2

Seems I was so happy to see that little Clematis, I didn't give her time to open up and shine.  It's a little cloudy out this afternoon, but she's sunny.

Good Morning, April

The first Clematis bloom of the year.
She shares trellis space with the climbing rose, Don Juan.
Quite a pair, those two.
